In 2006, Jasiel Cortes was convicted by jury of the second degree murder of Enrique Rivera. In 2023, Cortes’s petition for resentencing under Penal Code1 former section 1170.95, subdivision (a), now renumbered as section 1172.6, was denied by the trial court at the prima facie stage.
