While driving his pickup truck under the influence of alcohol, defendant Charles Bernhardy hit a motorcycle from behind and killed its rider, 23-year-old Vance Stammer. A jury convicted Bernhardy of several crimes, including second degree murder under People v. Watson (1981) 30 Cal.3d 290 (Watson), and he was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.
